Licensing your phototographs

I shared some pictures with an organization and one of the department heads asked if they could license a couple for collateral materials. I have only sold hard copies of photos and .. well ... dont know squat about licensing the photos. How does that all work?

Alex, as long as the images are your own original works, you basically own the rights to the images, and can sell them as you wish. You can offer the client the ability to use your images in collateral , and may charge a fee for that usage. If you put an agreement in place that the client will use those images only in collateral, then they can only use those images for the use specified.

In any case like this , you should put together an agreement to prevent them from reproducing the images for things like t- shirts for resale etc. Your agreement does not have to be anything elaborate, but just should be specific on the terms of usage.

Fogive my ignorance.
I want to go over this .. If I "license" a photo I have sold the rights to that image. I sold them a file they are free to use. I can stiplutate how it gets used. once they own the rights I assume I cannot use that photo again. I can display it as my own work but I couldnt .. say .. make notecards of it myself for sale since they own it.

Soes anyone have an agreement they have used to share?

What do you charge for something like that. This is all new. My very first camera's flash took a bulb so I have been doing this a while but only as a hobby.

Alex, Please feel free to snag any of the agreements from Kachoozie.com. The only time you really sell the rights is if you have some agreement in place, so if some entity uses your images you still retain the rights.

If you put a written agreement in place that specifically states you are transferring the rights then they would gain and hold the rights.

For anything like this, I just put some document together that is plain English as to what we agree on and have both parties sign it. Hope that helps.-ter
